In-Home Services

In-Home Services Include:

• Personal Care: Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) and/or instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). Assistance with ADLs includes: help with eating, bathing or showering, grooming, walking, dressing and undressing, transfers and toileting. Assistance with IADLs helps with more complex tasks that are still a necessary part of everyday life. These tasks include: using the telephone, shopping, preparing meals, housekeeping, transportation, taking medication and managing finances.
• Homemaker: Performance of light housekeeping tasks which may include: preparing meals, shopping for personal items, managing money and using the telephone in addition to light housework.
• Chore: Performance of heavy household tasks which may include: yard work, sidewalk maintenance and pest control, in addition to heavy housework.
• Respite: A service that allows the caregiver time away to do other activities. 
• Respite (Out of Home): A service provided in settings other than the home, including adult day care, senior center or other non-residential setting where an overnight stay does not occur, that allows the caregiver time away to do other activities.
• Telephone reassurance: A service where the older adult receives a call to check in and provide support and companionship.
• Friendly visiting/in-home visitation: A service where an older adult receives in-home visitation from someone for assistance and socialization.
• Homebound shopping: A service provided to homebound older adults to ensure they have adequate food in the home.
• Home modification and repair: A service provided to older adults or caregivers to ensure that the home is safe and healthy for continued community living.
• Assistive technology and automation: A service utilizing the assistance of technology or automation to ensure safety or provide companionship for older adults and caregivers.
• Medication set-up: Assistance in setting up medications so they are easier to take without errors.

In-Home Participants must meet the following requirements:

• Have active Missouri Medicaid (MO HealthNet)
• Be a Missouri resident  
• Be at least 18 years of age  
• Have a medical condition, diagnosis or disability that qualifies for nursing home level of care

Note: Missourians aged 60 or older do not have to meet nursing home level of care in order to qualify for In-Home Services.

In-Home Aides must meet the following requirements: 

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Pass a criminal background check
• Have a valid ID or driver’s license
• Be legally authorized to work in the United States

Note: Immediate family members of the Participant (spouse, parent, child, grandparent, or grandchild) are not allowed to be paid caregivers on the In-Home program.  Please see our Consumer-Directed Services program page if you are an immediate family member looking to be compensated for assisting a loved one.

In-Home Services is a Medicaid-funded program. The program is free for Missouri Medicaid (MO HealthNet) Participants. Our agency handles all the administrative duties and ensures your caregiver is paid.

Our agency can help eligible individuals meet their spend down requirements without paying out of pocket, making it easier to access our services.

2. Here's what to expect next:

If you already have a Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Care Plan:

• We'll submit a Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Care Plan Change Request for In-Home Services to the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS).
• Expect a call from a DHSS Care Planning Specialist to verify and make changes to the request. If the request is approved, the specialist will initiate a new care plan for you.
• Please continue using your current care plan, back-up plan and support systems until your request has been completed.

Please Note: Processing times for care plan changes may vary.

If you're new to the program and don't already have a Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Care Plan:

• We'll submit a new referral to the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) for you to receive Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS).
• A DHSS HCBS Assessor will call you to schedule a face-to-face assessment.
• At the assessment meeting between you and the assessor, prepare to answer a set of questions to determine if you are eligible for HCBS.
• If you are deemed eligible for services, the assessor will initiate a care plan for you.

3. We’ll schedule a meeting for you and your Aide to complete orientation, fill out necessary paperwork and review program guidelines. Once completed, you can begin receiving services.
